James Low
Translated and Culturally Attuned Through Contemplative Practice by Victoria Ying Jin
Published by High Top Publishing LLC
Being Right Here — Bilingual Edition presents the teachings of James Low in English and Chinese.
This book offers a contemporary introduction to non-dual meditation grounded in direct experience. Rather than promoting belief or doctrine, it points toward Immediate intrinsic Awareness — the open, lucid field within which thoughts, emotions, sensations, and perceptions naturally arise and dissolve.
Beneath its contemporary language lies a distilled and treasured contemplative tradition of direct experiential transmission. The preliminary practices included here are not ritual obligations, but skillful ways of softening habitual tension and settling the mind.
These practices are presented with respect to their lineage origins, yet offered in a spirit of mindful exploration rather than belief.
The bilingual format allows readers to move fluidly between English and Chinese, supporting personal contemplation, meditation groups, and cross-cultural dialogue.
Nothing needs to be achieved.
Awareness is already present — here, now, in the midst of ordinary life.
If you only speak English, you may not realize that the title of this book in Chinese is revolutionary. For years my community has struggled to find a good way to translate the modern scientific concept of mindfulness as used in international English into a single Chinese phrase. The title of this book -- Chana Dangxia -- beautifully captures that notion, allowing us to present a fully scientific perspective on some very ancient and powerful practices. This further sets the stage for an extraordinary integration: The Power of Now can be applied, through the lens of science, to pressing current issues such as successful human reasoning, communication, and mature rhetoric in the age of agent equivalent AI and medical grade biomodulation.

Being Right Here — A Finger Pointing to the Moon, Immediate Intrinsic Awareness
Being Right Here is a teaching as gentle as dawn light, pointing directly to the nature of our own mind – the nature, the essence and the capacity of the flow of all experiences. In a quiet and unerring way, it reveals the fresh presence of immediate innate awareness: in the radiant flash of timelessness, free from concepts, it is already just as it is — complete, open, unobstructed, and inseparable from whatever appears.
This is the first bilingual English–Chinese edition of its kind to meet the reader's eye -- an authentic Dzogchen practice manual presenting the essential view and meditation, taught by James Low, the lineage holder, in the presence of his root teacher, C. R. Lama, and rooted in the treasure teachings of the great master Nuden Dorje.
Being Right Here has been like catching snowflakes on an open palm. At first, there is shape -- words, meaning, intention -- but soon, it melts into something far subtler: a quiet clarity, moist and light, that seeps into the soft soil of being. This is not a book to be "thought about." It's not a teaching to be acquired. It is more like morning mist resting on spider silk, or a breeze brushing through bamboo leaves -- felt but never grasped.
How wondrous that anything at all can be said about what is beyond all saying. And yet, here it is, softly speaking.
James Low's expression has a peculiar transparency. He draws awareness out of the cocoon of concept and returns it to the rhythm of breath.
Sometimes, I paused mid-translation, not because the words were difficult, but because they were so simple, and so unutterably true. I often found myself gazing -- not searching for language but simply sitting inside the glow of the phrase. Not thinking, Just being. Sometimes with tears, sometimes with laughter, sometimes with a stillness too deep for either.
One radiant line continues to shine quietly within me:
"The unitary path of primordial purity of awareness and emptiness spreads as the spontaneous wisdom, free from all relative conditions."
How utterly wondrous. Here, the innate clarity of awareness is not something constructed, but something unbound -- inseparable from emptiness, and moving freely, unceasingly, unstained by defilement or effortful structure. It is not "my" wisdom, or "your" wisdom -- it is the wisdom of how things are when nothing is added.
What a blessing, what unspeakable beauty! That the mind, empty and open like the sky, is already luminous -- its radiance only veiled, not stained, by passing clouds. These defilements are not intrinsic. They come and go with causes and conditions. They are not our truth.
Abide As Rigpa, the fresh presence of Awareness
To abide in this presence is to rest in the innermost freshness of our being — without doubt, without altering, without resisting, without reaching for something else.
"Trust only the path that is utterly vast and profound." — Tilopa
The original purity -- the already awakened mind -- is the only real "self", the true body of reality, beyond time, beyond boundary, beyond substance. And the veils of confusion? They're not enemies, not opposites. Just ephemeral mist -- dispersing the moment we return to how it is right here.
Presence does not need improvement. It doesn't need effort. It only asks for one thing: don't turn away.
Sadness — be on the point of the sadness.
Peace — rest on the point of the peace.
Despair — stay on the point of despair.
Boredom — let it be.
Whatever comes, let it come, let it go.
In each fleeting moment, simply remain present — resting at the point of arising and passing, as the very ground, the source, and the luminous empty essence of all experience.
Again and again, this book gently points us back to the simplicity of being: seeing, hearing, sensing, thinking — not as separate experiences belonging to someone — but as the continuous play of life itself. All at-once. No observer, no observed. Just presence.
Totally Trust in Rigpa, not in any object
The true refuge is not something outside us. It is the immediate, intrinsic awareness — self-liberating and ever-present.
As James Low so says, from the depth of his own seeing, "The refuge is awareness itself."
And in this presence, the view breathes through the body. And what arises is not something to grasp, but something to feel -- We find our own intimacy.
Intimacy not as merging, not as effort, but as the natural kinship of all that is. Already here, already whole.
Final Reflection
Resting as the open sky of presence we all share, words and meanings arise like clouds, fresh as a spring flowing from heart-mind, and the translation already complete before it is spoken — the open sky of awareness, in its own dance, speaking itself.
What is offered here is not a "path" to walk, but a kind of barefooted trust in the groundlessness we already stand on. Not striving, but resting. Not improving, but releasing. In that release, the natural dance of life begins to move effortlessly. Thoughts, feelings, joys, and sorrows all arise like wind-touched grasses -- momentary, luminous, and free.
There are no stages here, no steps to climb. Only a kind and radical invitation to let things be as they are -- and to see the miracle that this "how-it-is-ness" has never, ever been missing.
Yes, as human beings we feel sorrow and joy, doubt and clarity, strength and fragility. But when we gently relax into the open presence of this moment -- not "what if" but simply "how it is" -- then a shift happens. The sky-like mind reveals itself. Unmistakably. Tenderly. All-embracingly.
And then… we smile. Not because we've arrived anywhere, but because we've stopped trying to arrive. In this gentle not-arriving, love begins to flow -- not as something to give or receive, but as the very atmosphere of being.
This book is not a "guide," nor is it a "method." It is a boundless, crystalline mirror of awareness. When you truly gaze into it, your body and mind, the myriad phenomena of the universe -- all are revealed as mirrored reflections within it. And you -- you are that clear, luminous mirror itself. In the stillness before each word arises, in the silence after each word fades, in the very place where each word abides -- you are the unmoving, ever-luminous vitality of this living moment.
If, while reading, there is even one glimpse when the sense of separation softens, when thoughts recede and simple being shines through -- open, fresh, holding nothing -- that is simply the play of immediate intrinsic awareness, already complete.
With all my heart, in the freshness of presence — thank you.

Nothing needs to be improved.
Nothing needs to be removed.
Immediate intrinsic Awareness
is already quietly present —
open, lucid, unconfined.
Life unfolds within it,
as movement within space.
Thoughts arise,
sensations shift,
emotions move.
Like reflections in a mirror,
they appear without leaving a trace.
The mirror is never harmed
by what it reflects.
Resting as how it is,
without adjusting experience,
Immediate intrinsic Awareness
reveals itself
through simply being, through presence, through nakedly knowing.
Nothing mystical.
Nothing abstract.
Just this —
alive, responsive, immediate.
The world is not fixed outside us.
It unfolds through our way of meeting it.
When there is openness,
there is knowing space.
When there is clarity,
everything shines by itself.
The clarity of awareness and emptiness of awareness is non-dual.
This is not a path of achievement.
It is the quiet recognition
that nothing stands outside the field of experience.
In this non-dual meditation,
subject and world
are not two.
